The Laborers Health & Wellness Clinics are here for you and your summer well-being needs, including treatment for insect bites and rashes.
Just thinking about ticks and poison ivy can make your skin crawl. But if you enjoy hiking, hunting, spending time at the cabin, or other outdoor activities, encounters with ticks and rash-causing plants can be part of the package. It's important to perform regular skin checks after spending time outdoors.
How to Remove a Tick
If you find a tick embedded in your skin, remove it as soon as possible by following these steps:
- Use tweezers to grasp the tick close to the skin's surface.
- Pull upward with steady, even pressure.
- Clean the skin with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.
- Keep the tick in a small plastic bag.
Tick Bite Symptoms
Many people won't experience any symptoms from a tick bite, but tick bites can cause:
- Small hard bumps or sores, redness, or swelling.
- Allergic reactions that can range from mild to severe.
- Flu-like symptoms, joint pain, or a rash, which can also be signs of a tick-borne illness.
When to Worry About a Tick Bite
Generally, tick bites aren't a cause for concern. However, you should reach out to your Laborers Health & Wellness team if:
- You're unable to remove the tick completely.
- A rash develops or you think the bite site is infected.
- You develop flu-like symptoms, including fever, chills, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, or a headache.
