Raising happy, healthy children is never easy. You want to keep your kiddos protected at daycare, school, on the playground, and when visiting friends and family – but what’s the best way of doing that? In most cases, it’s the stuff you do before your kids get sick that can help them stay healthy and avoid an unexpected doctor’s visit.

At the Laborers Health & Wellness Clinics, children 18 months and older can be seen for a variety of needs, including:

The flu and the common cold are two contagious viruses that share a lot of the same symptoms. But how you experience those symptoms and how common they occur are usually different. So how can you tell them apart? Here’s what you need to know.

1. Cold symptoms usually don’t include a significant fever

While you may be running a little warmer, colds rarely come with a significant fever. And while you can still have the flu without a fever, the flu typically comes with a few days above 100° Fahrenheit.

2. A dry cough usually means influenza

While a cough can be a symptom of both a cold and the flu, the type of cough you experience will vary. The flu will cause a dry cough that does not produce mucus. But a cold often produces mucus. So a wetter, more productive cough is common when you have a cold.

3. Sore throat, sneezing or a stuffy nose are more common cold symptoms

If you have these symptoms, you most likely have a cold. While sneezing or a stuffy nose could accompany the flu, they are more common during a cold.

4. The flu comes with muscle aches

Aches and pains are very common with the flu but rare with a cold. If you’re running a fever and experiencing general achiness, it’s almost certainly the flu.

5. Extreme fatigue is a telltale sign of the flu

If you’re dragging or feeling extreme fatigue, you likely have the flu. Sometimes you’ll continue feeling run down for a few days even after other flu symptoms stop. On the other hand, a cold will rarely stop you from performing your day-to-day tasks.

Flu shots

Many of us have a favorite season. You might love winter nights by the fireplace, autumn leaves or the first warm day of spring. But no one’s favorite season is flu season. When the familiar chills, aches and fatigue come on strong, we’re here to help.

Get your flu shot at the Laborers Health & Wellness Clinic

The most effective way to protect against the flu is to get your annual flu shot by the end of October. According to the CDC, you’re up to 60% less likely to get the flu if you’ve had the flu shot. And studies show that even if you do catch the flu, your symptoms will be less severe. It helps prevent others from getting sick, too!

Flu shots are available at the Laborers Health & Wellness clinics for all eligible members ages three and older. Schedule an appointment today to make sure you’re protected for flu season.

Skin cancer awareness

It’s important to take proper care of your skin, especially during the summer months. The good news is there are simple steps you can take to protect your skin on even the sunniest days of the year. Here are seven tips to help you keep your skin protected and prevent skin cancer.

  1. Apply sunscreen daily (we recommend every two hours while in direct sunlight)
  2. Wear a hat and sunglasses
  3. Avoid tanning beds
  4. Wear protective clothing with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) tag
  5. Stay in the shade during peak sun times
  6. Be cautious when taking medications that make your skin more sensitive to the sun
  7. Do regular skin checks and keep an eye on moles

If you find any spots you’re worried about, schedule a skin check through the Laborers Health & Wellness Clinics. It’s an easy and convenient alternative to seeing a dermatologist.

Diabetes

You probably know someone who has diabetes more than 30 million Americans live with the disease that
limits the body’s ability to process food into usable energy. The good news is that diabetes can be well managed
by taking oral medications and making healthy changes to your weight, eating habits and physical activity. But is
diabetes something you should talk to your doctor about?

Diagnosing Diabetes

Feeling very thirsty or hungry and urinating more often are common symptoms of diabetes. But some people
with type 2 diabetes have very mild symptoms that may go unnoticed. Early detection and treatment can
decrease the risk of developing complications from diabetes.

You may have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes if you:

A Laborers Health & Wellness clinician can talk with you about other risks factors and lifestyle changes you
can make to reduce your risk for diabetes or pre-diabetes. You don’t need a special appointment simply
schedule your next annual preventive checkup. Your clinician will ask you questions about your medical history
and symptoms and may order blood tests to measure the amount of glucose in your blood.
